18th Annual African Americans in Science at the Science Museum
Annual Holiday on 44th
Heritage Academy of Science and Technology
The robotics team displayed their robot at the Heritage Academy of Science and Technology, a school with a dense Somali population, where many of the students were never exposed to activities involving technology, science, or robotics.
University of Minnesota Math and Science Day
The Herobotics team was invited to the University of Minnesota’s Math and Science Day event. Along with displaying their successful robot from the 2009 national FIRST Robotics Competition, the team interacted with and further inspired the event’s young attendees.
Courage Center
The Courage Center invited the Herobotics team to feature their robot in order to help rally for a robotics team that would be for disabled kids. The team strongly believes that no matter what background you come from, or any disabilities you may have, nothing should be able to stop you from doing what you want to do.
This event, held at the Science Museum of MN focuses on African Americans’ contributions in the field of science and engineering and Herobotics was able to gain a place in this long-running program. While attending a pre-presentation brunch, team members were in close proximity to a great number of experienced and skilled engineers and scientists from companies such as Ecolab, 3M, and The University of Minnesota’s IT department. Being a 1st year presenter and a team of a very young age, Herobotics utilized this event to network and rub elbows with several very experienced companies in hopes of acquiring mentors, sponsors or partnerships.
An annual tradition in the Minneapolis Victory neighborhood, Holiday on 44th is a time for local businesses and community members to share goods and other crafts that they have made. Holiday on 44th is a way for the members of this community to see all that there is to offer and the Herobotics team was graciously asked to be a part of this event.
The Herobotics team was invited by the community to share and demonstrate the past accomplishments of the team in the 2009 season. There the team encouraged local youth to see math, engineering, and science in a new light, and also gathered tremendous amounts of support from prominent figures in the community that enjoyed learning that such an academic and intellectual program is in their own backyard.
