WHAT IS FIRST?

FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) often termed as “the varsity sport for the mind” began in 1992 with 28 teams in a New Hampshire high-school gym. The vision of FIRST is "To transform our culture by creating a world where science and technology are celebrated and where young people dream of becoming science and technology heroes."

- Dean Kamen, Founder

To carry out this vision, FIRST strives to inspire young people to be leaders in science and technology. Students are engaged in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering and technology skills. These skills help student become innovative, well-rounded, confident, and leaders.

The values of FIRST Gracious Professionalism and Coopertition, are at the center of each team. Gracious Professionalism “encourages high-quality work, emphasizes the value of others, and respects individuals and the community.” Coopertition involves learning from other teams and teammates; “means competing always, but assisting and enabling others when you can.”
